Does overheating cause sleep apnea?

RE: Does overheating cause sleep apnea?
I know it is a bit off track . I had an operation years ago for that very problem. It is called a "Nissen Fundoplication" it worked very well for me. I don't think overheating would cause sleep apnea ,but that is only my opinion. I have no medical grounds to back that up though.

When I wake up hot my AHI is higher. I did not connect this until I read your post. Last night was one of the nights I got hot. Woke up with my head hurting and had to wash the bedding. I had not turned on the fan that blows on me sleeping. I use a lite open weave cover and most of the time feel cool. I think being hot has caused me to remove my mask.

I have in the past just told myself that I was forgetful about the fan. I did not make the connection. Thanks

RE: Does overheating cause sleep apnea?
Hi kwhenrykerr,
Yes, this is, in some cases, what is happening, and as I said, "Its better to sleep cold and apply extra blankets when needed, rather than to sleep warm & be unable to cool down when the night temperature rises".
A word of warning though - don't sleep with a fan directed on you. It's a sure way of catching a cold. Better to have the fan directed away from you, so you get the cooling benefit from it but not the chill effect. During years in New Guinea I slept without covers or fan. Its quite amazing how well we do adapt to climatic changes. So my advice is to sleep "cold".
