CPAP ramp

From Apnea Board Wiki
Jump to: navigation, search

CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) ramp is used when the machine is first turned on prior to the user going to sleep. The machine starts at a lower pressure than the prescribed amount then slowly increases. Some machines allow the user to set the beginning pressure. Nearly all of them allow the user to set the amount of time. This enables the user to adjust to the pressure amount instead of getting the full pressure at the beginning.

For example, if the prescribed pressure is set at 12, the user could start at 6 as the beginning pressure to slowly increase over 45 minutes to end at 12.

The use of the ramp features is not required and many users do not use it. Some users, over time, have grown so accustomed to their prescribed pressure and feel that anything less is suffocating. Others feel that their full pressure is too much and they need the time to acclimatize each night.
