AHI & ODI Readings
Hi, I have only just joined today as I have received the results of my sleep test, but they have not been checked yet. I have an AHI of 84.3 and a ODI of 86.5? What does this mean? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards

RE: AHI & ODI Readings
It means you have severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea or with an AHI that high, you are suffering from Central Sleep Apnea.
Do you know the breakdown of the results? The number of Obstructives, Hypopnea and/or CA's. It's important for us to know about the central apnea if any. Be sure to request a copy of the sleep report and post a redacted copy here. This way we can be of more help to you. https://www.apneaboard.com/wiki/index.ph...efinitions Apnea - Cessation of breathing for 10 or more seconds during sleep. There are two basic types of sleep apnea: Obstructive Apnea is caused by a closure of the air passage despite efforts to breathe; Central Apnea is a lack of effort to breathe. Obstructive Sleep Apnea is by far the most common type. True apnea during wakefulness is extremely rare. Apnea/Hypopnea Index - (AHI) (RDI or Respiratory Disturbance Index) The frequency of abnormal respiratory events per hour of sleep. These events are classified as Apneas or Hypopneas. Apnea is when breathing (airflow) stops for 10 seconds or more. Hypopnea is a partial blockage of airflow resulting in arousal and a possible drop in oxygen level. An AHI of 45 would indicate that the patient is experiencing complete or partial airflow blockage 45 times per hour.

RE: AHI & ODI Readings
From what I could read from your sleep study, you have very serious sleep apnea!
Average spo2 was around 90 or so and major drops down to 70's and even maybe 60's for long periods of time. Heart rate average was close to 100. And some spikes as well. That is concerning! You had almost 100% obstructive apneas (very few CA's). You had some audible snoring as well. And flow limitations if I read that correctly. The good news is that hopefully, the machine that is provided for you should be able to reduce that massively high obstructive apnea rate down. They may start you on a cpap or even a bipap. A bipap treats flow limitations better, but you will probably have to wait and see on the machine. You may even have some positional apnea (just guessing since your OSA AHI is so high (80's or so)). Please read this and even if it turns out you don't have positional apnea, this teaches a lot about apnea in general:

RE: AHI & ODI Readings
Hi Jay51,
Thank you for your informative reply. I took the sleep test in early January and i have been told that I will have to wait approx. 8 - 11 months to see a Consultant on the NHS here in England. I will have to see a Consultant privately to plot a course forward. Regards Gerard |
