[CPAP] Waking up multiple times during the night

Waking up multiple times during the night
Hey everyone. I've been using CPAP for more than 2 months now. However, I wake up quite often during the night and I feel extremely exhausted during the day. I'm starting to feel pretty depressed since I feel worse with CPAP than without. Could you guys help me understand my OSCAR / SleepHQ data? Here is my last night : https://sleephq.com/public/6147f871-91aa-4a53-97b8-96799e7da3c5

RE: Waking up multiple times during the night
Welcome! Waking up multiple times per night is normal, so that by itself isn't necessarily a bad thing. But if you're tired out during the day, you certainly need to find ways to improve the quality of your sleep.

Do you spend fewer than six hours in bed most nights? Or are you sleeping some without your mask? Most people need at least 7-8 hours of actual sleep, and you appear to be falling short. If you're sleeping without your mask, I'd recommend not doing that. It can be a bad habit to form if you're going to get benefits from PAP use.

What do the breaks in therapy represent? Trips to the bathroom, perhaps? If so, can you reduce your fluid intake during the hours before bedtime to see whether that helps?

You are using a fixed pressure of 10 and no EPR. You have somewhat heavy flow limitations but very few OAs and Hs. That's excellent and gives you some room for experimenting.

I would recommend leaving your pressure at 10 for now and introducing EPR of 3. This will drop your pressure by 3 (to 7) when you exhale; by the same token it will raise your pressure by 3 (to 10) when you inhale. That boost to your inhalation can often help with flow limitations, snores, and hypopneas. If those are interfering with sound sleep, the EPR might help you feel more rested.

EPR produces a slightly different feel when you used your machine. You might want to try it during the day or evening just to get used to it a little bit. I think the majority of people find it more comfortable and pleasant than EPR of 0. If you like, you can start with EPR of 1 or 2 and then bump it up later.

See how you do with EPR for a few nights and let us know. Some additional fine-tuning might be in order then. And please work on getting more sleep!

RE: Waking up multiple times during the night
Thanks a lot for your answer!

Don't worry, I usually sleep 8 hours a night. But I often sleep 2-3 hours without the mask on at the end of the night because I have trouble falling back asleep. Generally when I wake up at night, I don't feel the urge to pee, even though I still go to the bathroom. I will try to follow your advice and drink less before going to bed.

I'm going to try to sleep for a week with EPR at 2 or 3 to see if I feel better. I will post an update next week, thanks again.
