Centrals and TECSA

Just throwing this out to the brain trust for discussion/debate.  Seems like there is a confusing aspect to these two things called Central Sleep Apnea and TECSA.


Both are called CA's.

I know that on the OSCAR chart it calls it a Clear Airway (CA)

I contend or at least my understanding is that it is the brain doing exactly what it should be doing during a TECSA and even in that there is that awful word (Central Sleep Apnea)

I wonder if a better name for a clear airway after no CA's in a study would be a low Co2 event.

There are Clear Airway and Central Airway events, each is different. However, both exhibit the same characteristic to the CPAP's air sensor. You have to have an EEG connected to determine the actual difference. That is why we just call them CA'S.

Nape, What prompted my post was that in a thread someone who had zero Centrals in a lab has CA's upon starting xpap. So TECSA's.

But someone told that person that they were (Central Apnea's) and were from the brain not sending a signal.

I imagine that scared the hell out of that person. I didn't want to get into it on that persons therapy thread. So thought that some general clarification in a new thread might be the way to go. But then I could be totally off base.
