I was told, when buying my used Airsense 10 Autoset that it was an imported machine and unable to connect via modem to Resmed UK.  It is also a 2G model and I was  not sure 2G service was still available in the UK.

But I noticed later that it was indeed making a live conneciton to the Vodaphone UK cellular network.

I think you're onto something here. There is a difference between registering a device on a cellular network and connecting to the actual cellular data network. If ResMed stopped paying for the cellular data plan for this device, the device may still be able to register on a cellular network but will be unable to send/receive any actual data.

I haven't taken it apart yet to check on the modem, but I'm thinking about it.

Subsequently,  I also tried the PC-based Rescan app and, when saving settings it told me that it was connected to my Airsense (which was unplugged at the time)  From this I surmised that   Rescan was able to communicate  directly wih the Airsense 10 via the cell network ie reading and writing.

ResScan says this when it is just reading and writing the SD card. It can change device settings by writing them to the SD. It's pretty confusing, I know.

ResScan ONLY connects to the SD card. If you try to use a backup directory on your PC, you have to create a fake SD card that points to the data in the directory.
