Mask(s) to use after nasal surgery?
#11
RE: Mask(s) to use after nasal surgery?
When my sleep doctor gave me the results of my sleep study, I was told that I had three options since my AHI was so low SadAHI = 10.5/hr.) I was told I could do CPAP, or consider an ENT doctor exam, or wear an oral appliance. I did my research on all of them for effectiveness and if patients were compliant with their treatment. I finally decided to see an ENT doctor who told me that my nasal septum was deviated and told me that if I had surgery to correct that, that he would also do a turbinate reduction in my nose to make it easier for me to breathe since I have a limited amount of space in my nostrils for breathing. Many mornings when I wake up, my lips are very dry, which I think that, that could be an indication that I'm a mouth breather when I sleep. I read that it is much healthier to be a nose breather.

For surgery, make sure they give you anti-nausea medication (probably in the IV and a prescription), run a humidifier, protein for healing, lots of rest and liquids, sleep in a recliner, sinus rinse and mists, lip balm for your lips, have lots of tissues available for bleeding, and take fiber as anesthesia slows down the G.I. tract. People say this is a pretty easy surgery to recover from and that it does make a difference in a person being easier to breathe.

I'm getting a ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet for Her machine as the machine I will start with. Thanks to the above posters, I have decided to use a full-face mask after surgery.

In the past I have made a few posts about nasal blockage and turbinates and dry mouth.
Instead of repeating that, I'll give links to those threads/posts.

1) The turbinate reduction and deviated septum surgery:

2) Dry mouth and Nasal blockage - things to try other than surgery:

3) Trying various stents prior to opting for the ENT surgery:

Hopefully there may be some useful information tucked away in those threads.

@ApneaQuestions     Is the Full Face Mask 'Fisher & Paykel - Simplus' the mask you used after your surgery?  Would you highly recommend this mask after that surgery? I have thought that I might use the ResMed AirTouch F20 Mask after the surgery. Did you try a F20 mask? Preference?
Do you think that both masks would be good to use after the surgery?

Also, how long did you wait after surgery to start using your CPAP machine?

RE: Mask(s) to use after nasal surgery?
I had the surgery 18 months prior to looking into getting started with a PAP machine.
By then, I was totally healed and the surgery was a non-issue.

I can't really help with real-world experience using a mask immediately after surgery.
If I was having the surgery again today and my AHI was around 10, I think I'd avoid the CPAP altogether and just wait a couple of weeks.

Sorry I can't be more help.

I use the AirFit F10. It's really just a matter of what works best for your face. If it isn't a problem to get to sleep without a cpap, then I'd just put it on hold for a week or two until things aren't so swollen and painful.

RE: Mask(s) to use after nasal surgery?
Here's an update on how my surgery went.

I was glad to have people at home for the first two days to help me out in changing my gauze 'mustache' and getting me food to eat. I ate mostly: canned chili (I added hamburger for more protein), cooked spinach with mashed avacado, and oatmeal. Good nutrition is important for healing.
I had a lot of bleeding the first three days and was congested the first two weeks. Did sinus nasal rinses two times a day and ran a humidifier.

I started on my cpap machine (ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet for Her) two weeks after surgery.
I used an AirTouch F20 mask the first three days (excellent starter mask after nasal surgery), then I have used an AirFit F30i mask since that time. I changed masks because I had issues with leaks with the F20. I have found both masks to be quite comfortable.

I will be working on getting my pressure settings geared more to me once I do my Oscar Daily Sheet and see my sleep doctor for my initial sleep follow-up after getting my machine.

I would say for future nasal candidates, that when you can start on your machine depends on how fast you heal and when your surgeon says you can start on it. It can be really individualized depending on your curcumstances.

RE: Mask(s) to use after nasal surgery?
I am having sinus surgery in June (earlier if a spot opens up) to evacuate my right sinus (maxillary) and remove a bone spur that is extending into a swollen turbinate.

Because I have a CPAP, the surgeon will not use splints, but there will be no packing.

I have found a oral CPAP mask,  Fisher & Paykel Oracle 452, and I wondered if any has any views on it.

Thanks in advance.
Brian
