More sleep clinic silliness

More sleep clinic silliness
I have a neighbor that went in for a sleep study. She knows I suffer from apnea. So she and her hubby asked me to look at her study results. She is very fit, 56 and is a runner.

She has an AHI-18.4 So moderate. And saturation never went below 92%

But where the silliness starts is that her study was hard to decipher. They never said a thing to her about her AHI nor any of her results as they showed her the door. I never could figure out if she had any centrals as it was not even closely translated enough for a lay person. So she is calling them to ask.

They suggested that she have a dental appliance made ($5k and not covered) She told them she has TMJ. They still said go dental. Never even mentioned the option of xpap.

So after our talk about the options. She is going to go with the appropriate xpap once she finds out about her centrals. She said as a former nurse, she could see it was obvious that the sleep clinic was just collecting fees for the labs and the patient was secondary or worse.  Angry

Here's hoping your friend finds a better clinic.  My first sleep study at one clinic found I did not have sleep apnea.  I was sent away confused.  The next three at another clinic all produced diagnoses of severe sleep apnea and more.

I tried a dental appliance custom-made by my dentist.  It did nothing for me but give me a sore mouth.
I only give suggestions from experience as a fellow CPAP user, not professional advice.

She will be fine. Just another case of a sleep lab not looking out for the patients best interest. But luckily she has a neighbor that has some experience in apnea's/xpap and could point her to this forum and the OSCAR program.

Was the ordering physician a dentist? If there's only "one option" to treat moderate Apnea, the one pushing that option is probably making money.

Make sure to get your neighbor to find out if that was the detailed study.
Mask Primer

Positional Apnea

Attach OSCAR, etc.

ALWAYS SEEK THE ADVICE OF A PHYSICIAN BEFORE SEEKING TREATMENT FOR MEDICAL CONDITIONS, INCLUDING SLEEP APNEA. I was wondering the same.

But as she already suffers from TMJ she was definitely not keen on a dental appliance that would operate in opposition to her TMJ dental appliance. So if it was dentist ordering that study. They are a crappy dentist.

She is going to contact the sleep lab and get all her numbers in a clear understandable manner so she can make an informed decision. I told her once she gets her clearly stated sleep lab numbers. She should join this forum and post those numbers and ask questions.

We will see. At the minimum I told her I could post her numbers on her behalf under my name. But that it would be much better for her to join up.
