Motor out of life

Motor out of life
Just like it says folks my trusty Resmed Airsense 10 started giving me the "motor out of life" message. It was just over six years old, with around 23,766 hours on it. It had been used in a camper trailer and caravan as well as being dragged around the country plus at home, so it was well used and well travelled. CPAP machines are not a cheap item down here in Australia, but I got a like for like replacement on sale. Now to the guts of the story. I bought another motor on Amazon and did the replacement job, and it lives on as a working spare machine. It's a pretty easy replacement and there are some video's to show how it's done step by step. Give it a go.

RE: Motor out of life
There are quite a few threads on this topic, and your replacement of the motor will result in a long continued life for your Airsense 10 and a nice standby machine. You will still see the "Motor life exceeded" error, but the device will continue to run. I sent my Vauto into #Supplier 28 and their motor replacement includes resetting the run-hours. It costs about twice the DIY motor swap at $220, but worthwhile for an expensive device.

RE: Motor out of life
I'd like to know if anyone just ignored the message and did not change the blower (at home or via a vendor), kept on using it, and just how long the device continued to function. Maybe still functions.

I have the same message on my S10 CPAP and after the message appeared, I kept on using it for a little while, then I got a good cash deal on a 60 hour S11 APAP so I bought that, then the healthcare system here replaced the S10 with a S10 APAP and thus, the long motor life version is shelved. But it didn't stop working.

Will it run 30,000 hours? 40,000 hours? I am curious to know when they actually die vs. warn you they were thinking about dying. If it runs 50% more then maybe it is not worth the effort to change the blower early or at all. If I was ResMed and I tested motors and found they had a working life "range" of 23,000 to 50,000 hours but a mean of 45,000 hours, I'd put a warning at 23,000 to encourage people to buy new PAP machines.

My Vauto continued to run without problem for without a problem until I received a new Vauto through insurance. At that time I had the device serviced by Supplier #28. I did start the process of getting a new machine approved when the message came up, and it was about 7 months. https://www.apneaboard.com/forums/Thread...e-10-Vauto

I have seen other members get at least a couple years after the message, so probably no rush, but you're definitely due to replace and retire this one.

RE: Motor out of life
I have an S9 which is brand new also, if I wanted a CPAP, I can use that. My old S9 broke, so the DME expedited a replacement ( it was due) to the S10, the one that today has 23,000 hours on it and the warning message. I asked what the repair price would be and it was a flat $250 (US eq.) so I said sure, fix it for that so I have a spare. This was more than 10 years ago when the machines were double today's prices so $250 was a good deal.

DME sends it to ResMed in San Diego, after which, poof! It's gone, courier records confirm it arrived, ResMed has lost it. So the local ResMed distributor after a lot of hemming and hawing, agreed to give me a new one, brand new in the bag. I doubt it has 5 hours on it today, more than 6 years later. Since the S9 and old S10 are CPAP only, and since I have a new S10 APAP and S11 APAP, the only reason I'd change the blower is for something to try but the motors are around $90-$110 (US) here and I'd end up with 2 CPAP machines I don't need.

I'd fix it to donate it here but the government pays for about 60-75% of the cost of a new machine for anyone and 100% for people on welfare/benefits so there's no charity looking for used machines.

Interesting that Nicaragua provides such good health coverage. Based on what I have heard from our Hispanic members, it varies very widely through South America.

RE: Motor out of life
There is in fact a place looking for used machines. Cpap assistance program from sleep health. I purchased a refurbished unit with a mask for $200 from them because my insurance deductible was too high.  I got lucky and got a unit with 24 hrs on it

Edit: sorry I saw you mentioned US $ and thought you were from here  Oh-jeez

When I pulled my machine apart I was shocked to see how much dust was in the motor section. Admittedly I dragged it to some out of the way paces and used it while camping, but I was careful to not subject it to really dusty environments. It is now as clean as new inside.

I also changed some motors, which is very easy after the first machine. Yes they can be really nasty and smelly inside, but all parts around the motor can be cleaned in soap water or more agressive fluids. Combined with new motor I have made several machines "as new".

RE: Motor out of life
Mine is out to vendor #28 as I write this. I try to DIY some stuff, but with something this expensive and complex, I decided to have a firm that does it often do it for me, worth paying up for, IMO.

I also got really lucky and got a new AirSense 10 a couple years ago when they were discontinued for about $400 less than a current new one. They apparently brought them back at some point because the still sell them now, but the cost of the new one and the refurbishing of the old one together were less than the cost of a current model. I'm a happy camper with two of them. One on about 6,000 hours.

By the way, how are the 11 models holding up? Have they been around long enough to gauge blower life?
