Philips' CPAP recall dents Q2 connected care sales

“We fully understand the impact that this is having on patients, as their well-being is at the heart of everything we do at Philips,” van Houten said. “We are in discussions with the relevant regulatory authorities to obtain authorization to start deploying the repair kits and replacement devices that we are producing.”

Meanwhile, regulators in the E.U., U.K., and Japan have advised patients to consult with clinicians before altering their therapy.

The recall affects nearly two dozen models manufactured between 2007 and this year.

By the end of this year, Philips said it aims to triple its ability to manufacture repair kits and replace units, ramping up to 80,000 per week.

The company also announced a €1.5 billion share buyback program, following its reinvigorated M&A strategy including the acquisition of the wearable heart monitor maker BioTelemetry for $2.8 billion, which was quickly joined by a $635 million buyout of the medical device integrator Capsule Technologies earlier this year. 

For the past three months, we have been laser focussed on the recall. It's impacting on us, lawsuits, news coverage, and any other new information we could find. We have discussed our own thoughts of the impact this would have on Philips. Then you read stories like the one above and start to realize that at least from the outside looking in, the recall for this giant of a corporation Philips is, seems to be nothing more than a small ripple. Time will tell.........

Probably the latter, and Philips is as inscrutable as ever.

Inscrutable? From what I understand Respironics went straight to hell when the founder Gerald McGinnis cashed out. None of this nonsense would have happened under his watch. You better believe the criminals of finance at the helm of this sinking ship have a plan to limit customer awareness to this recall so as to limit their cash outlay. Those recall registration reply emails landing the SPAM or TRASH folder, coincidence or by design? The lawyers are doing a better job at getting the word out than the company. 

The FDA and insurance companies that paid for the machines should be forcing Respironics to do right by their customers' health. A 12 month delay is completely unacceptable. The Dutch made tons of profit over the years selling these illegal products paid for with private and government insurance money. The FDA is a joke - drag these monkeys into court and force them to put up the cash necessary to turn this thing around in a few weeks, not 12 months. Philips could pay ResMed to ramp up production and provide quality replacements in a timely fashion. Anything less is simply criminal.

The email issue may very well be an ISP blocking issue.  There are many ISP's that will block bulk emails that have not been through delivery processing. I am not going to go through the entire process, but rest assured this is an industry wide situation that has been developed to help enhance security and anti-spam efforts. If you question your registration, try to re-register your machine and see what happens. If it says the unit is already registered, you are set.  We all know there is no new news.  Please don't build in anymore unfounded accusations and conspiracy theories.

Just discussing the same with another PAP user who didn't get a confirmation.  We're also wondering if e-mail servers might be making a difference too.  In a local small group of PAP users, those who used e-mail accounts with Microsoft (e.g. hotmail), haven't received confirmations; while those with gmail and others received confirmations.  Maybe Microsoft eliminates what they see as mass "junk" e-mails before they even hit user accounts.  Maybe someone can confirm here that Microsoft accounts work just fine when getting confirmations.

These uncertainties wouldn't exist if Philips immediately sent out verification e-mails, as with setting up a new online account - or if Philips allowed us to later edit our registration data to change our address, phone number, etc.

My gmail account put the Philips email into the spam folder.  Once I indicated that the email was not spam, I was able to download it to Microsoft Outlook.  My Outlook does, however, balk at downloading emails containing certain clickable icons.

Not an accusation or a conspiracy theory. It is reality. At the least is it complete and utter incompetence. A company with a $41B market cap can't reliably send an email. Nobody at Resp ever heard of Mailchimp? Or bothered to ask a 14yo kid how to assemble an email that won't get tossed into the SPAM folder? SMH. 

If a company with a $41B market capitalization needed to COLLECT $500 from you they darn well would get the message through one way or another. Like knock on your front door if necessary.

If a company with a $41B market capitalization OWED you $500 they darn well would do the bare minimum to inform you and hope you didn't get the message. Maybe use an unreliable email system and post the minimally required by law notice on their website. 

How many people in the world are still completely unaware that they are using a DeathStation? Frans van Houten must be held accountable by the regulators and investors for this atrocity. The product liability and injury lawyers are going to have a feeding frenzy. Philips needs to reimburse them for their TV advertisement expenses since that is how most people are learning about Foamgate.
