Resetting After Rainout Event?
Here I am, up again in the middle of the night, fuming over another rainout with my AirSense 11. It's not that the rainout was entirely unexpected -- I intentionally set Humidity to 7 last night, with our A/C running a bit cooler than average at 73 F -- but at least I have my SlimLine (unheated, uncovered) hose correctly draped over a high point on our headboard.
But here's my question: How do you get things back to normal after a rainout?
I heard the first "gurgle" right after turning over -- did I jostle the condensation? -- so knew a problem was brewing, but then it quickly got worse, waking my partner. Gurgle gurgle gurgle ... "your thing's making noise" ... turn off machine ..."sorry, dear" ... fumble around, shake hose, raise it up, hoping to drain ... CPAP machine activates because it's set to "Auto Start" ... loud whooshing noise from mask along with gurgles ... DOH! ... smash it with a sledgehammer and leave bedroom flustered to go type this thread.
We've all read countless treatises about rainout -- what it is, equipment upgrades, settings to change, etc.
But if you don't see any standing water in the hose, and it's not in the mask, where's the gurgling coming from?
I can't imagine we're intended to wake up, flip on the light, disassemble everything, dry it out, and hope for the best. Does anyone have a straightforward method for getting the AirSense 11 back to operating normally following an annoying rainout event like mine?
THANKS FOR ANY POINTERS! This ruined an otherwise perfect night's sleep, so I don't care to be caught out like this again. Nor does my sleeping partner (ugh).
NOTES
* Only in my 3rd week of therapy, so still getting acclimated to standard-issue equipment doled out by insurer;
* Humidity level 6 isn't enough to keep my sinuses from drying out / becoming stuffy / making nose-breathing painful or impossible;
* FWIW, I was running in APAP mode with range 8-11 (typically 9.8 avg.) and EPR of 2, a much more tolerable setup compared to clinic-prescribed CPAP 12 and EPR 3;
* Upgraded to the N30i AirTouch nasal pillow which I LOVE (as a lifelong mouth breather, that's saying a LOT);
* I take pains not to overfill the water tank, because I've observed that can (a) slosh during reinstallation, (b) seemingly make initial breathing harder, © delay heating, so humidification takes longer. Such a shame the AS11's reservoir is so dang small though;
* At daybreak, I'll grab the SD card and review machine status in Sleep HQ to see if I notice any anomalies;
* This was only my third rainout, so I believed I had tackled that issue; this post is more about recovering from it.
P.S. My first post, sorry it's so long. :-)
RE: Resetting After Rainout Event?
The error was self-inflicted and you know how to prevent it. You don't need humidity higher than 4 in Louisiana, or 5 in cold climates in Winter, and if you're going to turn down the AC, consider getting a tube cover like the Snuggle Skins on Amazon. As far as drying out the system, just disconnect the hose, empty the water chamber and let it dry today. I have always used a manual humidity setting of 4 and tube temperature of 28 C (80 F) and any water in the tube has been from over-filling the water tank. You did the right thing hanging the tube, and since water was at the CPAP outlet and not in the mask, don't overlook the most-likely possibility you simply over-filled.

Good observations all, although in this particular instance I had very deliberately
under-filled the water compartment before bed, so I can rule that out as a cause. (Confoundingly the rainout took exactly 6 1/2 hours to occur, by which time the water was nearly depleted.) Before that, everything was blissfully fine.
You're also spot-on to suggest a heated hose, or at least a wrap, and I'll see about getting one from my provider (for free, if possible) or Amazon (if not). Thanks for the brand rec on that. I really would love to dial it down to 4 after all is said and done. For the time being, I'll drop it back to 6 which has never caused an issue.

Get the heated hose and the cover. They'll both work together to combat the rainout.
Funny thing about heated hoses, my first and first not great "sleep specialist", tried to sell me on the idea the heated hose needed to be earned as a reward for being faithful to use CPAP. This was just before my joining Apnea Board, and they're talking about getting heated hoses...
Mask Primer
Positional Apnea
Attach OSCAR, etc.
