Flex lowers the pressure and the noise level when you exhale. It could be that the raising and lowering of the noise level with your inhalations and exhalations makes you more aware of the noise.
I would suggest you consider some white background noise, or maybe even ear plugs. When my wife gets a cold she snores, so I have to break out the ear plugs.
