Snuggs treatment thread
Snuggs treatment thread
Hi all -

I'm just starting off using my CPAP and need some help interpreting my OSCAR results after 2 weeks.

A bit of background - I did an at home sleep study via Lofta in May after a few years of waking up and needing to get out of bed 5+ times per night and my wife telling me I'm having apnea events though I don't snore much. My BMI is 26 and I run 10+ miles per week so I was resistant to the idea that I have sleep apnea. The results came back saying I have very mild sleep apnea - pRDI of 9.2 and pAHI of 4.9 and was prescribed an APAP machine with the default pressure settings of 4-20 cmH2O.

After the first few days of using it I turned off ramp and raised the minimum pressure to 10 cmH2O because I kept waking up when it would ramp pressure up and I felt like I was "drowning" from the air pressure. I've since lowered this down to 8 since it felt like 10+ was often blowing my mouth open during sleep.

That seemed to help but ultimately I still have yet to manage sleeping more than a few hours with it on - typically I can use the CPAP for the first 1-2 hours of sleep and then wake up gasping for air. After that I can't fall back asleep with the machine on so I take it off so I can get 5-6 hours of sleep but still continue to wake up a few times as the night goes on.

Any suggestions here or do I just need to keep trying to get used to it? Since I used Lofta for the sleep study I don't have a typical physician that I can talk to about my results at the moment.

RE: Snuggs treatment thread

You have by far more CA events than O or H.  Was that the case in your sleep study?  If not your CAs are probably treatment-emergent and will lessen as time passes.  If you had mostly CAs we have a different issue.  Post a copy of your sleep study if you have it.  That might help us.

For now, I suggest that you set your low-pressure setting to 7 and your high-pressure setting to 15.  I think that might be more comfortable and allow you to sleep longer with the machine.  Give it a try then let us know how it went for you.  Good luck!  Smile
