SpO2 < 88% for a long time with & without Cervical Collar

SpO2 < 88% for a long time with & without Cervical Collar
Sleeprider, Dave, Gideon, Apnea Community,

I thought I would start a thread and post my SpO2 directly from the "Smart Device Assistant"
pulling data from my Contec CMS 50F

This Report was BEFORE I got the advice to wear a Cervical Collar (30 minutes < 88%, yikes)

This Report was wearing a Cervical Collar - and was advised even this SpO2 <88% for 6.5 minutes was below normal

A new Sleep study has been approved and ordered by my doctor thank goodness
My sleep varies so much every night; so I thought I'd start this thread.
In this Thread, I will do my best (at the time of posting) to annotate circumstances around it, such as:
- my sleep meds (Ambien, Melatonin, Trazodone)
- Collar or no Cervical Collar
- A nightcap (drink) before bed
- Job tension or Life anxiety
- other

Either of these charts is evidence towards supplemental oxygen. The 2nd with collar has <88% for 6.5 min, still enough to qualify. Consider a doctor, nurse, or RT supervised 6 minute walk test where your oxygen is monitored. Results may be similar to these charts.

Wow, thanks Dave.

Imagine that - a walk test.
- Next time I go to the Gym, where I am on the Elliptical for 45 minutes:

- I can wear my CMS 50F
then download that 45 minutes onto the SpO2 software. That should be a good trace.
I'm thinking, if that is about the same as a "walk test", then I might have something.

After that trace, I can talk to and/or show my Doctor

My Mom has COPD, but she smoked most of her life
- not even one day have I ever smoked

Your altitude could easily be a factor. What is your Altitude? Any sleep test you do should be at a similar altitude.
Can you show OSCAR charts for the nights of the O2 charts

Yes true on the altitude aspect. I had a diagnosis of COPD for about 4 years recently, and my oxygen level did decrease from 96% to 90 between 2 walk tests about a year apart. The 6 min walk test would need be done at docs office to qualify given that both of mine were at a docs office to see about supplemental oxygen necessity.

Thanks Dave, Gideon,

I'm thinking the Apnea Board will be more in tune with Sleep Apnea than my Doctors. lol
Like most posts I read, my Sleep doctor does not want to hear my point of view.
My PCP Doctor is all ears.

My PCP ordered the SpO2 test, taken a couple weeks ago. (no results yet)

The PCP also ordered the Sleep Doctor to administer a "home" sleep study soon (at home first, per the Insurance Company).

Yes, high altitude here in Golden, CO (Denver) is 5,700 feet and my Doctors' office is nearby.

Future screenshots will include OSCAR with SpO2.

If your PCP would support your Apnea and lung needs, go that route. Have him/her order testing as needed and they're able to script necessary machines and supplies.

Yup, you surely have.  You smoked a lot of each cigarette she smoked if you were in the same room.  You may even have COPD/emphysema, and for the same reason.  Sad

That last cluster of OA really knocked the heck out of your SpO2 to dangerous levels. While most sleep doctors do not recognize a collar as a therapeutic device, you can see why we strongly recommend it. Your SpO2 is at a chronically low level, and any breathing disturbance seems to send it into a range where supplemental oxygen looks like it would be helpful. I don't think this is a sleep doctor issue! Please get a referral or see a pulmonologist with these concerns. He can put you on a monitor and make the decision whether you require supplemental oxygen at night or full time based on his findings. As you aptly note, the sleep doctor doesn't even want to talk about it, and I would be sure to fire that doctor and find a more interested and competent sleep specialist as well.
