[Treatment] Mouth Taping with KT
#1
Mouth Taping with KT
I have been a CPAP users since 1995.  Air leakage has been a persistent issue until recently.  It was not the actual loss of air impacting my treatment that was the issue.  It was the NOISES the leaking air made that disturbed my wife's sleep.
Having tried numerous kinds of masks, chin straps, and mouth taping I was at my wits end.  Mouth taping sometimes worked but none of the tape materials would stay on all night.
My wife was having foot/angle issues, and her PT taught her how to take her ankle with KT tape.
That gave me an idea.  I began cutting short pieces of KT and covering my mouth with it.  It is working!  For the first time in nearly 30 years the noisy air leaking STOPPED. My Resmed 10 shows a smiley face on mask fit every morning now.
The problem is that the KT adhesive is resulting in skin sensitivity issues.

Any ideas will be appreciated

Consider a SomNoSeal device, a soft, flexible mouthpiece that prevents mouth breathing and dry mouth during sleep.

RE: Mouth Taping with KT
cfabrams,

I also use KT tape on my ankles and knees to control swelling and found that it works well on my mouth too. I see a Physical Therapist twice a week and they've taught me how to use and wrap my ankles properly.

My regular doctor seems to be ok with me using it to control mouth leaks too.

If you have sensitive skin like me, you need to seek out a brand that is water resistant and made for sensitive skin.
Some of that adhesive can be brutal on the skin.

CureTape brand works well. It stays on and is easy to remove. Another one is Theraband.

Like anything else, KT tape is pricey, but certainly worth it if it helps with leaks. Try Amazon, as they have the most selection.

I'm also considering trying the SomNoSeal as mentioned by jdougc.

Good luck.

My dentist also has me using mouthpiece to prevent grinding, but I use the SomNoSeal device just inside my mouth.
I also use a 2x5 strip of KT mouth tape.
I get the occasional mask leak as I move around during sleep.

Thanks again!
The KT mouth tape is all I need to prevent leaks so long as I stick with nasal masks with minimal seal real estate area.
My problem is that the KT adhesive is beginning to give me skin problems.  If the mouth insert still requires taping, I may not be getting anywhere with it.  The stuff I have found that is advertised for CPAP users' mouth taping is all only 1" wide!  That's not wide enough to get purchase to hold my lips closed. I'd like to try wider mouth tape if I could find it before going to an additional device in my mouth.

The KT tape brands I listed in my above post are standard 2" wide.

RE: Mouth Taping with KT
I ran out of mouth tape recently and recalled I had a drawer full of KT tape, however, it did not adhere well for me. I was hoping I had found a workaround, but, life said no lol

RE: Mouth Taping with KT
Thanks.

Yes, that's correct.  I'm using KT tape, and it is 2" wide.
My issue is that the adhesive on the KT tape is hard on the skin of my face.
I have found tape advertised as for CPAP-related mouth taping, but none that I have found is wider than 1". That is not wise enough
Hoping that the adhesive on tape advertised as for mouth taping might be kinder to my face skin, I'm searching for mouth tape that is wider than 1", preferably 2".
Does anyone know of tape actually made for mouth taping that is 2" wide?

RE: Mouth Taping with KT
I, too, have extremely sensitive skin and use 2 inch wide kinesiology tape.  I was utterly discouraged, because I need to tape, but all the tapes hurt too much to remove, and left my skin sore and red.  I ordered Medline's barrier cream to try, but instead received Medline Remedy Essentials Prevent Silicone Cream.  This stuff works!  It's designed for people sore from incontinence, but it works for skin protection from the K tape! The tape stays on but removes without pain. YAY!

I don't know if Amazon is still sending this cream when one orders the barrier cream, but they do offer Medline Remedy Specialized Silicone Cream, which I imagine is roughly the same product.

P.S.  Don't try barrier cream!  It hurts.

Best wishes for finding a good solution!  Smile
