Unconscious failure to mouth breathe

Unconscious failure to mouth breathe
Let me begin by saying that I find this Board more helpful, more often, than most of the Respirologists who I have dealt with.  That being the case I am hoping that some folks might have experience similar to mine and perhaps advice to share.

My issue is that my nasal passages congest at night to the point where they are blocked.  This happens both on and off CPAP.I have tried everything to keep them clear, including surgery, but it is always an issue.  The problem however is that even when using a full face mask I don't switch to mouth breathing when my nasal passages block.  Instead I keep my mouth shut and wake up gasping for air.

Has anyone else had this experience and if so do you have any advice?

Thanks

RE: Unconscious failure to mouth breathe
That is the first time I’ve heard of this problem. Most folk with a congested nose would automatically open their mouth to breath.

As far as the nasal congestion...have you tried nasal rinses? Also, check your humidity level. If set high, lower it a bit. If set too low, raise it. You will need to experiment.

You may want to see an ENT, and ask for a nasal spray to use before bed.
