Pressure gets too high

Pressure gets too high
Only my 2nd post so I'm not familiar with all the correct terminology yet.
I'm OK during the Auto Ramp process but somewhere in the night - I think it's after about 4 hours use - the pressure gets so high that it breaks the seal of my full face mask and also the pillow head gear.  Between 13 and 16.  Any advice?

RE: Pressure gets too high
This might be much more a problem with fit than it is about too much pressure.  Were you not prescribed a pressure, or a range of pressures with a maximum setting?  Do you know for a fact that your machine is currently set to provide that maximum?

I had the same experience during my first week or so, and I thought the pressure was too high.  However, I made it a point to be careful about the fit of my mask and how I placed lateral and vertical pressures on it while I turned and attempted to fall asleep.  I learned, and so should you in time...just not overnight probably.

To be honest, though, after about four weeks of trial treatment, I went back to the sleep lab for confirmation purposes.  When he relayed the results to me, the sleep specialist asked how I felt about the PAP experience, and I mentioned that sometimes the pressure seemed a bit aggressive to me.  I had been getting a max of straight PAP at 10 cm.  He very amenably said, "Why not lets try you for a range of between 5 and 8 max, we'll continue to monitor you closely, and see how you settle in?"  I agreed because the settings could always be modified to improve my AHI.  And those settings are where I am currently, now three months on, and with a slightly dropping AHI of about 0.7 average.

To get back, though, you may need to adjust your headgear, or abandon it altogether and find a better fit.  I wouldn't be concluding just yet that your pressure is wrong for you.

If your machine is data-capable with an SD card, it would be most beneficial to see some hard numbers from your machine...how you slept.  Download "sleepyhead" freeware at sourceforge and then place your SD card in a reader/computer front-plate slot with reader, and let's see what the numbers show. Often it's nothing more than sleep position that causes the blow-by, which I agree is annoying.

RE: Pressure gets too high
Tlippy,

Welcome to Apnea Board!

There are a few ways to get you fixed up. I see according to your pressure you are running 4-16?. Generally 4 is not usually good starting point, however without data i cant recommend adjusting to min 6 or 7 like i normally would.
I think you should follow the links in my signature to get Sleepyhead and post some data according to the chart organization link. That gives everyone the ability to better advise you with changes tailored to you as an individual.
For the mask blowouts, i recommend using the mask fit feature of your machine if available. It will raise pressure and you can then adjust your mask at higher pressure since you are experiencing leaks at pressure 12-16ish.
I also recommend using the mask during the day while you are awake. Try adjusting all the straps and become accustomed to what you like and don't like, and what adjustments control different parts of the mask. This will allow you to make adjustments during the night, to pinpoint leaks, faster and less disturbingly to your sleep.

Just looked at the SD slot - it's empty.  Will any SD card work or is proprietary?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, i believe the SD card size is 2 Gb max. I think that is the only requirement.

I just remembered, the literature you received with your machine may or may not contain a pamphlet size folder that could possibly have an sd card tucked in there. Worth a check possibly.

I just tried a Duracell 4 GB SD HC card I had laying around and it worked fine. It uses FAT32 for a file structure. It does take a few minutes for the machine to prepare and put the files structure on the disk though. So be patient when you put it in the first time.

A 4 GB card was what came with my machine. It has the ResMed name on it, but is just a standard SD HC card with FAT32 as far as I can see.

Any standard SD card upto 32gb will work fine whatever you have lying arround or that is cheapest at your local store just pop it in the machine making sure it’s unlocked and then use the machine as normal

Thanks for the correction. I'm a goof. 32 not 2

Jesse,
You are partially correct. The Resmed will only use up to 2Gb of the SD card, regardless of its size. At least that is the S9. I don't know if they increased the limit on the A10 seriues

Thank you for the information. For the purpose of this thread, i would like to point out that a 32 Gb card is much easier to obtain than a 2 Gb card and therefore i still recognize my accidentally misleading post prior Smile
